I may currently be unwell with my second bout of Covid of 2022, but I am still managing to feel festive as Christmas gets closer and closer. The snow last week helped, making my Somerset town look as though it had been dusted in icing sugar. Seeing my son’s reaction to his first sighting of snow was completely heartwarming, as was his little gasp of delight when he saw our Christmas tree for the first time.
I also know, though, that Christmas can be a tough time of year for many. If you’re struggling to get into the festive spirit this year, I’m sending my warmest thoughts your way. And thank goodness for books. Books can provide an escape during the toughest of times, something I have been experiencing first hand recently after one of my favourite people received some really tough news. It’s hard often to know how to help when someone is dealing with something really difficult. One of my ways of helping (as well as providing limitless hugs) has been to give her books. Lots of books. Uplifting, absorbing, transporting books.
I feel very grateful for another year of wonderful reading, as well as another year of writing. A big thank you for all your support of me and my books this year. I love what I do and couldn’t do it without all my lovely readers.
My favourite books of 2022
Some new, some old: these are my top recommendations from the books I read this year…
All About Evie, Matson Taylor - The joyful, hilarious sequel to The Miseducation of Evie Epworth, set in 1970s London and following the journey of heroine Evie as she tackles work, friendship and finding love. A really lovely and uplifting read that I have since recommended to friends when they’re after an easy, feel-good story.
Book Lovers, Emily Henry - Like many, many other readers I totally fell in love with Nora and Charlie, the agent and editor duo in this funny, sexy and very bookish novel. I also particularly liked it for the friendship between the two sisters that runs alongside the romance - totally believable and poignant.
Lessons in Chemistry, Bonnie Garmus - Elizabeth Zott, 1950s chemist, mother and plain-talker, is one of those characters who stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page on a book. The writing in this was totally beautiful too.
The People on Platform 5, Clare Pooley - A lovely tale of friendship and community, with characters you find yourself rooting for.
Hush, Kate Maxwell - This novel about a woman struggling with the early stages of motherhood really spoke to me. It was the first time I’d seen some of my own feelings about those early days reflected on the page.
All My Mothers, Joanna Glen - Another but very different book about motherhood, this book deals beautifully with all the different types of mothers and ways of mothering. With a gorgeous setting thrown in to transport you.
After Paris, Nicole Kennedy - I loved this story of three friends who met in Paris as teenagers and whose lives remained intertwined thereafter. It deals with lots of moving and relatable issues while also being a real page-turner.
Books I’m excited about in 2023
Some titles to add to your 2023 TBR list, or to pre-order now…
Thirty Days in Paris, Veronica Henry, publishing in February - I was lucky to read an early copy of this gorgeous, delicious, uplifting book about a woman whose marriage has recently ended and children have left home, who seeks out a second chance (and secrets from her past) on the streets of Paris.
Spilt Milk, Amy Beashel, publishing in March - This gripping book about a mother facing a decision about whether to continue with a second pregnancy really moved me - it is incredibly honest and thought-provoking.
In a Thousand Different Ways, Cecelia Ahern, publishing in April - I love Cecelia Ahern’s writing and have heard wonderful things about her next book. My proof copy of this is currently high up my to-read list!
The Vintage Shop of Second Chances, publishing in February - And of course I am VERY excited about the launch of my fourth novel! Set in my hometown of Frome and focusing on one vintage shop and one vintage dress, this book tells the story of Lou, Maggy and Donna and I can’t wait for you to meet them.
I’d love to hear the books you’ve particularly enjoyed this year or are excited to read next year.
Things I’m loving
I currently have Zara’s Gingerbread candle burning on my desk and it is just wonderful - a proper grown-up festive scent that I can’t get enough of.
I recently took a trip to York (so festive and beautiful) and fell in love with Bowler and Betty, a wonderful shop selling vintage-inspired clothing. I came away with a tartan dress and a lovely dogstooth dress with a little velvety collar, both of which I plan to wear over the festive season (as soon as I’m out of isolation!).
I still have a few more Christmas presents to buy and this year I’m trying to get as much locally as I can. I’ll be heading to my local high street next week to find the last bits. Here’s a guide to my local town of Frome, including some of my favourite shops.
